Meet the Trades Behind Stony Creek Homes: Dan from Appa Electrical

Director Jamie takes great pride in working with the very best in each industry, and Dan from Appa Electrical is no exception. His craftsmanship, experience with intelligent systems and technology, and strong understanding of the finer details that elevate a home make him an invaluable part of the wider team.
For our first edition of our “Meet the Trades” spotlight series, we asked Dan to share his perspective on working on high-end homes across Sydney’s Northern Beaches, emerging technologies in the electrical and solar space, and some of his favourite custom electrical features. From integrated energy systems to the collaborative culture on site, Dan offers insight into what goes into creating homes with Stony Creek.
What do you enjoy most about working on luxury building projects?
It’s the level of finish and the chance to do things properly. You’re working with high end fittings, clean flush power points and switches, quality lighting, and proper exhaust and ventilation systems that actually work.
Using top quality products really does make a difference to the end user. You notice it straight away in how the home feels and operates. It also gives us the opportunity to take more pride in the install because everything is designed to look good and last.
From your perspective, what makes building on the Northern Beaches unique?
The Northern Beaches definitely keeps you on your toes. You’ve got the coastal conditions with salt and wind, so everything needs to be installed with longevity in mind.
On top of that, access can be tight and sites can be tricky with slopes and space, so planning ahead is key. The clients are usually very switched on and open to doing things properly, which makes it a great place to deliver high quality work.
What emerging technologies or trends in electrical and solar are you excited about?
The biggest shift is everything starting to work together as one system. Solar, batteries, EV charging, and home automation are all becoming more integrated.
Brands like Sigenergy, Tesla, and Sungrow are pushing that space forward, especially with all in one systems and smarter energy management. It’s not just about generating power anymore, it’s about when and how you use it.
Load control, smart scheduling, and EV integration are all becoming standard, especially as more homes move towards full electrification.
What has been your favourite project to date working with Stony Creek, and why?
To be honest, it’s been all of them. Every project is different, and that’s what makes working with Stony Creek so good.
Each build has its own challenges, design elements, and level of detail, so you’re never just repeating the same job. It keeps things interesting and gives us the chance to keep improving how we do things each time.
That variety, combined with the standard of the builds, is what makes the projects stand out.
What do you value most about collaborating with the Stony Creek team on site?
The team culture is a big one. Everyone on site, including the subbies, work really well together. There’s good communication, everyone is on the same page, and people actually take pride in what they’re doing.
It’s a good environment to be in day to day. Most days we’re all sitting down together at lunch, having a laugh, which makes a big difference. It’s a solid team to be part of.
What are some special or custom electrical features you’ve loved incorporating into Stony Creek homes?
A lot of it comes down to the finer details. Clean lighting design, well thought out switching, and making sure everything ties in with the overall feel of the home.
We’ve also been able to integrate things like home automation, EV charging, battery systems, security systems, and properly designed internet and data services so the whole house runs smoothly.
One setup that stands out was installing a sig energy backup gateway with a smart port. When the solar is producing excess and the battery is full, instead of exporting back to the grid, we redirected that energy to the hot water system. It boosts the hot water during the day so the homeowner is using less power at night.
That kind of setup is where things are heading. It’s not just about installing the gear, it’s about making the whole system work smarter.
