Building a Calm Home: Our Favourite Materials and Finishes from Balgowlah
Building a home that feels calm, light and liveable starts with the material choices you make. Selecting finishes that look beautiful, perform well over time and support the way your home is used every day is what’s going to make the difference.
For our Balgowlah home renovation, the brief was to reimagine the home for a young family, expanding the footprint, refining the layout and introducing a sense of ease throughout. A new upper-level addition and reconfigured floorplan allowed for better separation between spaces, while maintaining a connection to the home’s original character. The result is a light-filled interior where each material plays an important role.
Creating a light, liveable and calm home
In this article, we share our favourite materials and finishes from our Balgowlah project.
Soft neutrals
A soft palette with subtle tone variation is where our focus began. Warm whites, light beiges and muted tones… colours that shift throughout the day as natural light moves within the home. From a construction standpoint, working with a narrow palette requires precision. Inconsistencies stand out, so attention to detail in installation becomes critical. Clean, even joins between materials, consistent paint finishes and carefully aligned tiles all contribute to the overall effect.
Large skylights
The inclusion of large skylights introduces natural light from above, enhancing the textures and reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. They are a beautiful, standout feature that can really create an uplifting, light-filled oasis. Natural light is also known to boost your energy level by lifting your mood.
Natural timber
Warm, natural timber grounds the home. We see this in the timber flooring which runs throughout. Stability, durability and what’s suitable for the Australian climate are all important factors to consider when selecting timber. Choosing the right species and finish ensures the flooring will age gracefully.
Timber elements layered throughout the home in furniture and detailing add depth without overwhelming the space. This balance is key. Too much variation can disrupt that calm feeling in a home, while too little can make the space feel flat. Timber introduces just enough contrast to keep the spaces feeling lived-in and inviting.
Exposed brick
In a light, neutral home, exposed brick adds character, creating a layered, lived-in feel. When executed well, exposed brick adds depth and variation into a space, grounding softer finishes like painted walls and joinery. It's authentic, and that’s difficult to replicate with newer materials.
As builders on the Northern Beaches, we often work with original brickwork typical of the area, which requires careful preparation. This includes stripping back surfaces, repairing damaged areas and sealing the material to ensure longevity without compromising its natural texture.
All-white custom joinery
Designed to integrate with the home's architecture, the all-white custom joinery contributes to the overall calm aesthetic. In the kitchen, full-height cabinetry creates a clean, uninterrupted backdrop. The cabinetry has been meticulously measured and installed flush, so that it aligns perfectly with the walls, ceilings and adjoining surfaces. This can also be seen in the master bedroom.
Layering texture through material selection
Texture plays an important role in adding depth and dimension to the home. In this project this is demonstrated in:
Combination of finishes
Throughout the home there is a beautiful combination of finishes, including the terrazzo island bench top, textured tiles in the bathroom and timber engineered flooring. While these are all neutral in colour, the texture creates a lovely warmth.
Brushed nickel hardware
Throughout the home, brushed nickel hardware creates a lovely contrast without overpowering the space. The fine, brushed finish adds a softness to the cabinetry. Our clients selected some great options from Lo & Co and were really happy with the end result.
Simple fixtures
Clean silhouettes ensure the materials and architecture remain the hero of the space, while also keeping the home feeling uncluttered. This sense of simplicity naturally supports a clearer, calmer mind.
Outdoor elements
At the rear of the home, the living area flows out to a well thought out alfresco and BBQ space set up for easy entertaining and relaxed family living. Reclaimed brick introduces warmth, softly grounding the space and gently connecting the home to the garden.
The exterior finishes were selected to complement the existing structure of the home, with a restrained palette that feels considered and appropriate to the setting.
The completed vision
For this project, the result is a relaxed home where each material works together to create a calm space. Exposed brick, soft neutral tones and warm timber all balance one another without overpowering the space. The materials have been selected with longevity in mind, ensuring they stand the test of time. Through thoughtful planning and skilled construction, the home feels settled and beautifully lived in.
