Client Q&A, What It’s Really Like Working with Stony Creek
When it comes to building a new home, there’s nothing more reassuring than hearing directly from someone who’s been through the process. We recently caught up with Ian, the owner of our Mona Vale project, to chat about his experience working with Stony Creek. From the first plans to the finishing touches, he shares what it was really like working with our Northern Beaches building team.
What initially drew you to choose Stony Creek for your build?
During the design phase our Architect recommended 4 potential builders including Stony Creek. We met with all 4 builders, assessed their capability vs our specific requirements, visited some of their recent projects and spoke to their previous clients about their individual experiences. Stony Creek stood out from the rest in most aspects and in particular we felt that Jamie really listened to us, understood our personal circumstances and was keen to work closely with us to bring our dream home to life.
What were you looking for in a builder, and how did Stony Creek meet those expectations?
We looked at 5 key criteria;
Quality of workmanship
Value for money
Speed
Relationship
Reputation
Stony Creek proved to be the right choice on all of the key criteria through an aligned vision, open and frequent communication and absolute commitment to quality.
How did Stony Creek handle communication and keep you updated throughout the project?
We had a set onsite meeting once a week with Jamie where we discussed the projects’ progress and what the plans were for the next few weeks. I also visited the site each day to be fully immersed in the build and spoke to Will (Project Manager) and the team. They were always very welcoming and open with their communication and we felt included and valued as clients.
There are always unexpected challenges in a build. How do you feel Stony Creek handled these?
Developing an open and constructive relationship was very important. As issues arose we discussed them in detail, including potential solutions and recommendations. This approach ensured the project progressed on schedule and that all issues were resolved quickly.

What advice would you give other clients about navigating delays or issues that come up during the process?
It’s very important to have an aligned vision and detailed schedule, this will ensure that everyone, including the clients, have a clear understanding of what is expected and what is required to keep the project on track. However building quality bespoke homes is a complex and difficult process and things don’t always go to plan. When challenges arise, open communication and quick decision making is essential to bring the project back on track. Stony Creek were absolutely committed to delivering on their commitments and many times went over and above to meet important deadlines.
How important is it to build a strong, trusting connection with your team of builders?
A strong relationship built on a shared vision, mutual respect and trust is an essential ingredient in having a successful build. We developed this very quickly with Jamie, Will and the Stony Creek team and value the ongoing friendships that have been made.
What’s your favourite feature of the finished home?
We love the beautiful open plan kitchen, dining and lounge room with the stunning fireplace and sandstone surround. This area opens up fully to a balcony that creates a large living area with stunning views over Pittwater.
How does the finished build reflect your lifestyle or vision?
We wanted a bright, modern, welcoming home that features environmentally friendly features. Stony Creek has really delivered a high quality product that exceeded our expectations, a place that we are proud to call home.
How do you feel living in the space now that it’s complete?
It’s a very comfortable home to be in and it has everything that we ever wanted in a home. Our home brings together all the effort that went into the design and the many enhancements that came from the experience of Jamie and Will during the build. Everywhere we look we see the attention to detail that went into the project and we are absolutely thrilled with the result. It’s a special place to share with family and friends.
How did working with Stony Creek make the building process different from what you expected?
We have built before but building with Stony Creek was an entirely different experience. Right from the start we enjoyed a close relationship with Jamie and Will, one built on a shared vision, mutual respect and trust. The entire team from Stony Creek were 100% committed to our project and built our home as if it were their own. The attention to detail, suggestions for improvement and problem solving skills were constantly on display. We engaged openly and often discussed different ideas for improvement, ending up with a finished product that we are very proud of.
Do you have any advice for someone about to take on a new build or renovation?
After developing your plans the most important decision you make will be who you chose as your builder. Doing your due diligence and selecting a builder you can trust will help ensure your success. Having a detailed budget and schedule is vital and regular meetings and updates are important to keep everything on track. Building a new home is a complex task and you should expect challenges along the way. Every problem has a solution and working with an experienced builder will help you navigate these challenges and deliver a home you can be proud of.
How would you describe the overall experience of working with the team?
We really enjoyed working with the team at Stony Creek, they have a great culture that includes a client focus, can do attitude, hard work, attention to detail and mutual respect. They work with specialist trades that share similar values, making the building experience exciting and enjoyable.
